He is 36 years old and said he first started racing 26 years ago. And he will be the first to admit that chair technology has made everyone faster, including him. Aluminum chairs have given way to carbon fiber machines that are lighter and stiffer and more ergonomically suited to the 26.2 miles of pushing. Hug has a team of engineers from multiple companies in Switzerland who build his bespoke chairs — two for training, one for racing. They are the same engineers who help build Formula 1 racecars.He is as fit and as strong as he has ever been, he said, and whenever he sets a course record, he credits 50 percent to the fast chair.
